S/o Richard Carslake of Sidbury
480; in a letter to his cousin Mrs Toller 1899, J B Carslake lists the Oxford details of Abraham, William & Richard, with the comment “I wonder who the following people were & where they come in”
479,302MURDER OF THE PAUPER SCHOLAR OF SIDBURY 1664
Devon Notes and Queries, vol. 1 of 1900-1901, records that Richard Karslake, a pauper scholar of Exeter college, Oxford, was killed by one Turner at eleven o'clock on the night of 25th July, 1664. Turner, a student at Wadham college, got off because his father was a Sir William Turner. Karslake came from Sidbury and the writer notes that 'there are still Carslakes in Sidbury to this day'.
10 Exeter College Association Register 2001 on the web mentions 'Richard Carslake [sic], a student and bible-clerk' being killed by 'one of the Turner brothers of Wadham College.'
‘In the Register of Exeter College Oxford, by Boase, there is reference to Richard Carslake (also spelled Kastlecke) who at 11 o'clock one night was killed "over against the Wilcokses the barber by the Star, by (?John Turner) commoner of Wadham, son of Sir William Turner, civilian. By means of his father Sir William Turner his life was saved." Richard Carslake, son of Richard of Sidbury Devon was a poor scholar, matriculated 5 April 1661 aged 18. Studied at Exeter College until 26 July 1664.’
