124 ‘Diary of William Ford of Branscombe, 1789-1791, Transcribed by Elijah Chick Esq of Exeter in 1917-18. William Ford was the 4th child of Edward Ford and Elizabeth his wife. William Ford died in 1797 aged 28. There are many references in the diary to Weston and Stuckey, and Chick remarks that William Ford appears to have 'acted as reeve or general right hand man to Mr Stuckey of Weston...' In 1917-1918, the original Diary was in the possession of Mr Clement Ford of Lower House, Branscombe, a great-great nephew of William Ford.
I have not finished skimming through it, but I did find a couple of little items I am sure will interest you:
p.5. May 18 1790. 'Old Mr Bartlett died early this morn'.
p. 29. [Monday] November 8 1790. 'Mr J Leigh broke his leg by accident'.
p. 30. November 13 1790. 'Mr S [Stuckey] sent John to enquire after
Mr Leigh !!!!!!!!!!
[yes Mal, I did count them: 10 exclamation marks!]
In 1791 your John Leigh was at Elverway:
p. 49. April 1 1791. 'Went to Elverway to speak with Mr John Leigh - concerning Reference he says he will go to Weston soon'.”
570Bur ‘Ford, William Braddick, Bachelor, aged 28, a reputable farmer, eldest son of Edward & Elizabeth Ford of this parish. he destroye’d his health by intemperance; which brought on a rapid decline, that baff’d all medicine: and he at length fell an early victim to the devouring grave, in the prime of life; when a robust constitution seem’d to promise him health of body and length of days’
124A William Braddick Ford was an enumerator in Branscombe parish in the 1841 census
