In the Exeter Cathedral Archives is a Bargain and Sale of messuages etc. purchased from commissioners for sale of church lands. 5 Dated 29 December 1650, this document is a Tripartite Indenture which was made between (1) Christopher Dicus of London, Merchant and Robert Taylor of London, Lynnen Draper (Trustees for and on the behalf of Richard Husband of London ffishmonger of the Messuages Tenements Lands and other things hereafter in theis presents particularly named) (2) John Hooke and John Ley of Branscombe, yeomen (3) The said Richard Husband
Roughly paraphrasing, the deed tells that Whereas Sir John Wolleston, knight, Robert Tichborne, Thomas Noel, Marke Heldesley, Stephen Estwicke, William Hobson, Arnold Owen Roe, George Langham, John Stone, John White, William Wyberd, Daniell Taylor, William Rolfe, and Rowland Wilson, Trustees by two severall Acts of this present Parliament for the sale and conveying of lands and possessions of the Late deanes, subdeanes, Dean and Chapters, Cannons and Prebends etc, or five or more of the said Trustees By their deed Indented of Bargain and Sale inrolled in the High Court of Chancery bearing date 23 June last past [1650] for the consideration therein expressed (did amongst other things) grant alyen bargain and sell unto the said Christopher Dicus and Robert Taylor their heirs and assigns for ever All that Messuage or Tenement with the appurtenances commonly called Bulston and all houses, edifices, buildings, barns, stables, orchards, gardens, yards and courtlages to the same belonging And 7 closes inclosed arrable and pasture grounde with appurts in the Northside of the same house, containing by estimacion 27 acres ..etc etc
then or then late in the tenure or occupation of George Channon his assignee or assigns And all ways, easements, watercourses, advantages and appurtenances to the said Messuage are Tenement and premises belonging or appertaining, which premises are lying and being within the Manor of Branscombe, mentcioned to have been late parcel of the possessions of the Dean & Chapter of the late Cathedral Church of St Peter in Exeter And the Reversions, Remainders and Services of the same To Have and to Hold to Christopher Dicus and Robert Taylor their heirs and assigns for ever as the Trustees by the Acts of Parliament are enabled to convey the same ..
And whereas Christopher Dicus and Robert Taylor by their 'deed pole' bearing date 23 June 1650 were so conveyed the premises merely in Trust for Richard Husband his heirs and assigns for ever Now, Christopher Dicus of London, merchant and Robert Taylor of London, Lynnen Draper (Trustees for and on the behalf of Richard Husband of London ffishmonger of the Messuages Tenements Lands and other things hereafter in theis presents particularly named) at the request of Richard Husband of London ffishmonger and in consideration of 5/- and in consideration of £327.7s.8d. paid to them by John Hooke and John Ley of Branscombe, yeomen release the premises to John Hooke and John Ley of Branscombe, yeoman
