79 “The following is a copy of a paper in Aunt Mary Leigh’s handwriting” [ Note that, like her cousin Sally Pyke, she is confused about the generations, and omits the Bartlett surname]
“Our grandmother’s maiden name was Abigail Channing of Bulstone. She married John Leigh of Weston by whom she had one son John Leigh who married Mary Carslake daughter of John Carslake of Berry in Branscombe who were the father and mother of our father & mother [sic]. Mr John Carslake of Berry was a Merchant & sent ships to Newfoundland fisheries & and other places he had three sons our great uncles one of whom was drowned at sea the other two were gentlemen living on their own estates they had no children living.
Mr & Miss Carslake who lived at Cotmaton with whom we were so intimate were children of our great-grandfather’s brother - John Carslake’s sister or brother I forget which had an only child, a daughter who was an heiress she and our grandmother Mary Carslake who married John Leigh were brought up together as sisters with her own daughter Mary Carslake our grandmother. The father of the late Mr Stuckey of Weston married her she had £10,000 as her portion & had she died unmarried this fortune would have come to our grandmother. One of John Carslake’s sisters of Berry married a Mr Walrond whose son had a only child a daughter who was married to Lord Rolle she had £100,000 to her portion. One of Mary Carslake’s our grandmother’s first cousins on the side of the Channings or the Leighs I don’t know which was Lady Pole of Shute House this lady when Mother was a young woman was very fond of her & Mother used to be much with her. I suppose this lady must have been great-grandmother to the present family of Shute House. Grandfather & Mother had 3 sons John Henry & William.”
