Large Carslake pedigree gves the following: ’John Carslake Capt RN .. of Cotmaton born 9 Sept 1786 d 19 aug 1865 Bur at Bristol. Sett. 8 July 1817 “who inherited Cotmaton” [from Uncle John who built the new house]10,160. ’Entered’ [RN?] 18 Jan 1799.177 Was midshipman on the “Victory” at Trafalgar179,176 Made Lieut 1805.177 Imprisoned by the French 1809-1814176
‘The muster transcription shows the following:
William alias John CARSLAKE, midshipman, aged 18, born Colyton, Devon,
first appeared on board 18/4/1803, received Naval General Service Medal,
Lieutenant 22 October 1805, muster no 35.
In ADM171-1, Crew members of HMS Victory, who had their claim approved for
the NGS Medal, clasp Trafalgar, the transcription shows:
"CARSLAKE John, Midshipman 5/28 Apparently the medal was with the
family in 1990 and was possibly due to be presented to the RN Museum."
Biographical notes show the following:
"CARSLAKE John/William, Midshipman. Born 1785, Colyton, Devon. Carslake
entered the Royal Navy in 1799 at the age of 13 as a Boy 1st class. He
joined Victory at Chatham in 1803 as a Midshipman. he came to the
attention of Captain Hardy, when in May 1804, he discovered and successfully fought
a fire in the cockpit. he was promoted to Lieutenant immediately after
Trafalgar. His courage once more came to note when he rescued a First
Lieutenant and a seaman from heavy seas in the English Channel, without
hesitation, he dived overboard and saved their lives. For this heroic act,
he was promoted First lieutenant of the Proserpine. In 1809 while off
Toulon the Prosperpine was involved in a stiff fight with two French frigates,
unfortunately overwhelmed the crew were taken prisoner. Carslake spent
five years as a prisoner, he was incarcerated in Verdun, a citadel situated
over 200 miles from any seaport, setting a real problem for any potential
escaper. he was finally released in 1814 as the war drew to a close.
Retired as a Commander in 1852.
John CARSLAKE served as Justice of the Peace for Devon. He died at Clifton in 1865."’176

‘Prize List - HMS "VICTORY"
The following is a copy of a receipt for the government grant
Trafalgar Prize and Bounty Bills.

"We whose names and marks are hereunto subscribed being the Captain, Officers and Company of His Majesty's Ship Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805, under the command of the late Rt Hon Lord Nelson acknowledge to have received of our agents, Messrs Chris Cooke and William Rd Cosway, by ourselves of our legal representatives, the several sums expressed against our names, being the amount of our respective proportions of the proceeds of 4 French Ships and Spanish Ships captured on that day, together with Bounty Bills for the enemy's ships destroyed. And we do hereby discharge our said agents from all demands on account thereof."
