proved in Court of D. & C., Exeter, 22 June 1992 by Nicholas Cove [[Cave]] & William Bartlett.
To my 6 children the gold seal’d up in a purse near to the value of £100 equally between them after my burial is discharge for which I ordain about £30; also the money in the house or owing to me at my death.
To Nicholas Cove gent & my son William B, my farm of Cutchell, to be improved by setting it at yearly rent or otherwise, & out of the profits to pay £30 a year for 60 years to my son Mathew if he live so long, & after his derath to any of his children by his now wife Elizabeth until the lease for three lives expires, or if he leave no children by the sd. Elizabeth she to have £16 a year during the term if she so long live, & the surpluus profits to go to my daughter Mary B, & my grandchildren Ellis & Mary B, equally, or in the case of the death of any of the above to my sd. grandson Ellis B, or in case of his death to his brother Samuel B.
To my son Mathew b. the stock & corn on my grounds belonging to my tenement where i live, & to my sd. grandson Ellis B, the goods in my sd. house.
To my eldest son my leases for 3 lives from the Church of Exeter, & the lease for years which I have in a third part of Brandscombe Manor according to a settlement thereof made in marriage.
My son Cove & my son William B. to be exors, in trust for my sd. grandson.

“In 1660, 'Ellis Bartlett gent holdeth one fair house and tenement wherein he now dwelleth called Eastcombe' under the annual rent of £1.12.9d. This was a leasehold property in the Manor of Branscombe. He held other property besides. Hole was a freehold, and 'Ellis Bartlett gent for holles' was a Free Tenant of the Manor. “222

‘Richard Clapp of Sidbury, a sequestration official, sold a tenement in Branscombe to Richard Huse of that parish, and another Branscombe man, Elliss Bartlett (assessment commissioner from 1657) bought a tenement there in 1650 from two carpet-bagging Londoners who had been the first purchasers from the trustees.
